2016 Summary

I've not retired from painting!
Just felt a little burned out the last weeks and did other things than painting littel miniatures.
And although the year has three more days I'll sum up what I've finished this year (and this might explain why I'm a little tired of painting ;)

Mek Gun Gretchin

Sometimes trouble starts with an easy sentence
Of course. No problem!
That's what I said when a friend asked if he can have my Mek Gun for tomorrows match (Yes, I'm letting other kids play with my toys!) and totally forgot, that my gretchin aren't painted yet. And what's a Mek Gun without a crew.
I put the containers aside (again) and started painting the crew.
Obviously they aren't super-special extra nice. Just Tabletop-Ready. I hope they don't kill too many of my Blood Angels tomorrow.

Realm of Battle Board WIP #1

Weeks ago I started priming my Realm of Battle Board.
I had this done before in black to paint an board with ash and lava but then decided to go for sand because of my Armies on Parade Contribution. So I spend about three cans of Zandri Dust for the basecoat.

After that I washed everything with Seraphim Sepia. In the end I spend two big pots of it on the board and finished the sand-part with a round of drybrushing with Ushabti Bone. After six tiles my finger hurt. Please GW, make more ergonomic brushes. Or I have to paint less...

Blood Angels Tacticals

Here they are. It took ages to paint them because I really had a lack of motivation

Usually a ten men squad takes a week or two. These needed over four or five weeks.
A lot of details. A lot of little stuff which annoyed pretty much.

Armies on Parade 2016 @ Warhammer Würzburg

Parade Day at Warhammer Würzburg yesterday and boy what a great show that was.
There were some pretty impressive entries with lots of love and details.

But see yourself. I didn't manage to take pictures of all 14 entries but here are some of them

Armies on Parade 2016 - Ryza Parade-Board

Here it is: My Armies on Parade 2016-Paradeboard

War Convocation from Ryza as promised last year.
It's not all of my Adeptus Mechanicus but the most.

Cerastus Knight Castigator Showcase

It took a while. I don't know for what reasons, but finally I managed to take some good pictures of my Castigator.
The Foldio 2 is big enough to fit a Cerastus Knight. Even with a Foldio 360 beneath it. But enjoy the pictures of Baron Samedi.

Road to Armies on Parade 2016 - Part 2

Actually this is not a work in progress-article.
This is more about the finished board.
From the last article I went on pretty quickly

Always remember: This is terrain! Don't get lost (too much) on the details. I kept this to a minimum. Well, at least as it is possible to keep details to a "minimum" with ForgeWorld terrain tiles.
I painted a lot of details on this board because this is base for my Armies on Parade entry. And it was pretty hard because the ground blends into rocks, concrete and metalsheets at many places.

Blood Angels Tacticals - WIP #1

Remember that goal thing?
I've one in front of me: Campaign this week. I don't want to field Blood Angels with my so sucessful Sniperscouts.
Yes, I've an "old" army of Blood Angels from back then when Death Company and Assault Marines were troop-choices.
I dont't play them often lately because I don't like my scouts as troops. But I was also too busy and to lazy to finally get my second box of Tacticals painted.
Until now. For the beginners store campaign.

To be honest: I'm not working hard on this. I got distracted by my new computer a lot and for my taste the Blood Angels Tactical got a lot of decoration on their armor. For a Sternguard this might be okay, but for tacticals that's too much for me. But I keep on working. First up was the Seargent and the Heavy Bolter guy.

Road to Armies on Parade 2016 - Part 1

Few days ago my computer died.
It happend suddenly and he didn't even do some of the beeping (Better know as POST) like R2-D2 when he's not happy. Drop dead. After 10 years. So far for quality on mainboards nower days.

Lucky me, I've chosen another (analogous) hobby. Even more lucky me the friendly UPS-Deliveryman was around this week and brought a pretty big box.

So: Time for Armies on Parade.
I'll take part with my Ryza War Convocation featuring the new Baron Samedi (Pictures of him are postponed until I get my new computer). And maybe already with some of the new units from ForgeWorld.

As mentioned before, I'll use a predesigned Board this year and not dive into the sea of DIY-Terrain.

First of all: ForgeWorld-Terrain is awesome (yes, I also the imperial emplacement). It's superlight and superdetailed. Far better than I could do with DIY. But as you can see above it's pretty limited for big units.

Weekend roundup

This has been a more or less productive weekend. Let's see what happend

Imperial Knight

I spend the whole Friday freehanding a banner for my Castigator and gave him the finishing touch.

I guess he'll be too big for my small lightbox so I'll have to find a way to get some nice pictures of him.

Thursday, 1 September 2016

Cerastus Knight - Castigator WIP #2

The title is a little bit misleading.
I've worked on the Castigator for over a month now and learned a lot about working with resin and pushing my borders a little bit further.

Because it's House Hazamel it needed the sunset and Mr. Reapy as signature.

The head was one of the things that gave me headache
The lenses are so deep inside you almost can't reach them. But he looks great. Not visible: I painted all the tubes and hoses of the torso again.

Armies on Parade ahead!

Time is counting down for Paradeday 2016 and I thought I had a great idea last night what to do to defend my second place from last year.
Let's do wooden green box with sprayed on letters like a military box and hide the terrain inside.
I did a quick scribble of the idea to get a rough impression.

500 Points Newbie Campaign

I'm honest:
My first idea was to field 500 Points of flying and swarming Tyranids which might have ended in not so much fun. Flyrant, Warriors... not so much nice stuff.

Next idea: Fielding admech. Well beginners campaign and I'm not so mad about scrolling around for five different weapons for one squad. Sorry guys: You're out!

One also mean idea was to field just one Imperial Knight. Not much to carry but frustrating for the kids I guess. I've seen my small one stomping a Terminator Squad...

Khorne Daemons? Never played them outside of Age of Sigmar so they're not my first choice.

Ultramarines? Why not. I've a bunch of these guys from the Black Reach Box. But just one troop choice so: Nope... They're out. I'm not going unbound.

What's left on my shelf? Good old Blood Angels!

Gamification of Wargaming

Everybody loves achievments. And unfortunately there are (nearly) none for wargaming. Well, until now.
Pimpcorn from Bell of Lost Souls introduced a nice set of achievments.

Let's see how much points I can score...

Deathwatch - Week 1 (and a half)

I'm honest: My first thought about the Deathwatch-Release was: I don't need this. I'll wait until they're sold seperatly.

A photo posted by Flo (@hazamel) on

But as you can see, I caved in and bought the full release. I've to admit that I split the box with a friend who get's all the Eldar-Stuff. So finally it was a bargain for both of us.

Cerastus Knight - Castigator WIP #1

I haven't painted a lot lately because of real work and other real-life projects that needed attention.
I decided to start with my Cerastus Knight for my Armies on Parade-Board and as support for my House Hazamel.

So step 1: Cleaning Resin!

Unfortunately I found something like this (a lot...)

Khorne Fleshhounds

More dark red for my Khorne-Army!

This time it's "Fluffy and his friends" as I call them. Khorne Fleshhounds. And not the finecast ones - It's the metal version.

They were really not very friendly when it came to assembly. I don't know how often I reglued the wings on the head.

My very first (and second) Game of Age Of Sigmar

When Age Of Sigmar came out last year I only took a quick look and decided that this is nothing for me and continued painting my Warhammer 40k-Stuff. Until some time at the beginning of this year when I bought the "Start Collecting - Daemons of Khorne"-Box.
Because I like Diablo 3 and I really like the idea of playing one army for AoS and 40k. The box sat on my shelf for a while until I heard about the global Campaign. The rest is history of this blog.
Fast forward to yesterday when I played my first game of Age of Sigmar that wasn't a demo-match.

Death vs. Chaos/Order-Team

As mad as it sounds this was the only way to find a solution to our nice threesome yesterday.
I teamed up with order to defeat Death.

Saturday, 16 July 2016

I am Slaugther

I've been on the road the last few days so I did some reading instead of painting. Before I left I loaded my trusty eBook-Reader with "I am Slaughter" by Dan Abnett.
There have been a lot of discussions about the new Series in local Warhammer-Store but I wanted to give it a try.

Finished Blood Angels Whirlwind

I think I missed to show you my finished Whirlwind back then.
So while I'm still fighting my Khorne-Daemons I'll show you another red one.

I called him "Buster" and I hope he'll bust many enemies!

Building a Khorne-Army - Finishline

Start Collecting "Daemons of Khorne" is finished!
I didn't belive that I'll make it to the finishline in time. But here they are!

Let's start with the Bloodletters. I've ten more of them on my desk but these are the ones from the box.

WIP - Building a Khorne Army #3

By popular demand: Part three of my Khrone Army Painting Project.
This time: Bloodcrushers!
It's important to keep the Bloodcrushers seperated all the time. You never know what will happen if you don't do that.

I also painted them the classic way in Khorne Red. No fancy metal-look.

Monday, 4 July 2016

WIP - Building a Khorne Army #2

Comparing the stats of the Skullcannon and the Bloodthrone both are pretty equal.
But never underestimate the power of a ranged weapon. That's one thing I learned from playing Warhammer 40k.
For painting the Skullcannon I had the "great" idea to give it an outstanding look. I painted I metallic and clear red.

I was the first time I used Tamiya Chrome with my airbrush and I worked pretty nicely. Not spectacular "I can see my face"-Chrome but nicely.

WIP - Building a Khorne Army #1

Long time no update.
I've been busy trying to reach my goal to have a Khorne Army by July 14th.
Last thing I showed you here were some pretty grey Bloodletters.
But I've been diligent since that.
My Bloodletters are done.

I did the bases like they're described here and they came out pretty nice. It's really tricky to hit the right moment for adding the black paint.

Thursday, 16 June 2016

Let's talk about goals...

It's a rather funny coincident that I talked to a friend about having goals to be motivated to paint a few days ago.
We both have more or less completed armies so the only thing that urges us to paint is to try something new or to get rid of the horrible backlog on our shelf.
I feel a little unmotivated since I finished my AdMech-Army and had no real reason to dive into building and painting since back then. I'm done.
Well... as done as you can be.
We already thought about planning a match to paint a little more.

Entry Games Workshop!

At least for me this has changed today when I read about the global Age Of Sigmar Campaign starting an July 14th.
A good reason to get this little box from my shelf and start giving my already painted Daemon Prince of Khorne an army.
I've about a month to do so. That's what you call a goal.

Something completly different: AoS Liberator

I hab him since he was published with the White Dwarf last year. And while I was waiting for my Zombicide-Knights to dry, I started painting the Liberator. Mainly out of curiosity how metallic red armor will look like. And to give the Vallejo Crackle Medium a try.

Saturday, 11 June 2016

Lack of motivation

I've to admit that I have a certain lack of motivation at the moment.
After I finished the AdMech and my Landraider I slowed down painting pretty much. So this Whirlwind is sitting on my desk for way to long time and I've no idea how to give him a special look.
It'll be clearly no masterpiece in the end.
I just hope to finish him soon and in style before moving on to new projects with (hopefully) more engagement.

I'm thinking on doing a few small freehands on the sides, weathering a little. It's an artillery tank so I'll keep damage to a minimum.
You'll see where I end up. But I'm still woriking on it ;)

New large base kit

Games Workshop is doing bases!
I was really looking forward to get those when I read about them. I don't need the cityscape ones but I can use those in the large base detail kit pretty good.

Usually I use spare pieces of the buildings for that and nothing else is this kit. And there's really a lot in the four sprues

Testpainting Imperial Guard

Oops... I've been quiet for a while.
Haven't been so productive lately.

I've painted up five Cadians to see how to paint my whole IG-Army

I started of with whole green and white for snowcamo.

Blood Angels Landraider Redeemer

It's done.
Here are the final pictures of my Landraider Redeemer.

Unfortunately a lot of the dust I added with pigments disappeared while sealing it with purity seal.

Landraider Redeemer WIP

Back to red.
I still hope to get a new or at least major updated codex for my Blood Angels. But I don't think this will happen anytime soon. But I still enjoy painting them and so I'm on my way to finish the ride for my Terminators: A Landraider Redeemer.
As ususal I did completly useless stuff like painting the interior.

Sunday, 8 May 2016

Tales of Dead Earth - Captain Nova Lightspeed

Last part and only a few days left until Free Comic Bookday in Germany which is also releaseday for the box.
This time it's Captain Nova Lightspeed!

I had a hard time with this young lady. No because she's difficult to paint but she lost her left arm twice and I had to deburr the inside of the leg with a file (Lucky me, that I've all those nice toys ;) )
But this is about painting.

Wednesday, 4 May 2016

Need to paint more

For those who know me this might seem a little odd:
I need to paint more!
After having finished my AdMech-Force I slowed down a little in terms of painting.
This wasn't so bad beacuse I tried a few things and did something completly different.
Unfortunately my favorite geek-supplier announced that he's clearing of all the Games Workshop stuff with a nice discount which ended in a shopping frenzy for me, that will save me from buying new boxes for the next month years.
This contains stocking up on
  • Terrain
  • Blood Angels Stuff
  • Tyranid Warriors
  • a *cough* sixth *cough* Imperial Knight
And yes a whole Cadian Defense Force to testpaint cheap models for my good Deathkorps of Krieg ones.

And because I was such a bad boy, I sat down and started to finish my Landraider Redeemer.

Sunday, 1 May 2016

Tales of Dead Earth - Painting V2 Schneider

Part 3 of my Tales of Dead Earth-Series!
This time I'm showing how I painted the android V2 Schneider.

As reference I got a painting from Christian to match the colors he had in mind for Schneider.

Saturday, 30 April 2016

Leman Russ Battledamage Testtank

A while ago I bought a Rhino for testing battledamage and other "destructive" things. Things you don't necissarily want to do the first time on, let's say, a ForgeWorld Knight.
Until now I haven't build this Rhino but I got my hands on Games Workshops "How to paint a Citadel Tank" which is really awesome material next to ForgeWorlds Model Masterclass books.
And I had this Leman Russ standing around as first tank for my Death Korps of Krieg Army.
So the Leman Russ got promoted to "Sgt. Testtank".

Tales of Dead Earth - Painting Arzakh

And on we go with the second member of the fourheaded Tales of Dead Earth-Squad.
Undead but not un-bad SpaceZombie Arzakh.
I'm really a big fan of Krika's Undead Spaceguys. That's why we have a big framed print of another dead Astronauts hanging in our hallway. Yes, we're THAT kind of nerdy!
But back to topic.

I did a little research about Spacesuits and stuff like that and ended up with one of my favorite movies: Mars Attacks.
So Arzakh got a blue suit like the martians. He also got white gloves and a white cap. To make him easier to find he has a orange collar.

Tales of Dead Earth - Painting Gasmask

Seems like I'm a pretty lucky guy when it comes to limited miniature-things.
I'm not just owner of Index Astartes - Apocrypha, no I also preorderd one of just 50 boxes with metal minitures designed for the comic-series "Tales of Dead Earth" by the local artist Christan Krank.
And, to be even more lucky, thanks to Gerd form Comicdealer I got box number 5 of 50 way befor official release in May.

Ein von Flo (@hazamel) gepostetes Foto am

To show you that there's no magic inside, I'll do a little tutorial on each of the miniatures. Today I'll start with Gasmask.

Skitarii Ironstrider

So this is the last Skitarii before my little Tales Of Dead Earth break.

From the latest results I could tell that the Dragoon with rifle isn't that successful on the battlefield. So I decided to "speedpaint" an Ironstrider for the big battle on Saturday.

I was pretty surprised that I ended up with 74 likes on Instagram for my inital idea of basedesign.

Feast of Fluff Results

Finally the results of the Feast of Fluff Contest are here!
For those not wanting to read so much: I didn't win anything.

This was my fault, because it seems that I misread the terms. Instead of describing my custom House Hazamel I wrote Fluff about Sir Gordon of House Hazamel.
At least I painted my well-known knight right.

Win-A-Titan-Story

The competion is closed and I sent in my entry just in time.
So time to share how I want to win a Titan.

Stroy was limited to 400 words and I ended up closer to 500 in my first draft. I had to leave out some details and foucs on the main elements:

Name of my Titan: Princeps Hazamel „The Wizard“
House Hazamel was founded back in the medieval times of old Terra by a mighty wizard called Hazamel. Ever since the leader of the house was called Hazamel. This continued even deep into the 41th century.
The current princeps got his name „The Wizard“ during a mission on Graxor, a small and hostile planet at the edge of the universe. They were sent here with an exploration force from Ryza to find a missing artefact. The task of House Hazamel was to scout the area for enemies.
During this mission they reached an area that looked like a lake that had dried long time ago. Hazamel started to cross it, flanked by two other titans at the shore to both sides. He didn’t notice the cracks in the ground that kept growing bigger with every step he made.

Ryza Picture Update

First of all:
I don't know why Blogger is eating anonymus comments. I'm really sorry! I'm sure they are in a parallel dimension together with the lost socks from the washing machine!

Second: I had some time today to take some more pictures of some of my Ryza-Army-Models. Haven't done this with a neutral background as far as I see. So here is the Dunecrawler, some of my Kataphrons, my Kastelans and the TechPriest.
Have fun!

Happy Easter Battle! Cult Mechnicus vs. Orks

Second part of my Happy Easter Battle!
This time we played 750 Points of Cult Mechnicus vs. Orks which meant:
10 Models on my side vs. 19 bikes and buggys on the other side.
We decided to roll for missions and ended up with the mission with the hidden points (I don't know the english name...)

Lucky me: Bonus points for killing fast attack units which my Cult doesn't have.

Battlereport: 1500 Points AdMech vs Chaos Space Marines

I think I'm doing something horrbily wrong!
Last night I played with my combined Skitarii and Cult-Force against 1500 Points of Chaos Space Marines.
And I lost.

So there must be something wrong with my tactics.
I ended up with no forces left in Round 5 I think.

I had a good start and my opponent had a lot of respect for my tracked grav guns. He even tried to hide his landraider behind a building.
He had the first turn an pretty much decimated my Skitraii Rangers to nothing. His try to kill my Dunecrawler with two direct hits from lasguns ended in my beloved forcefield. Can't belive I rolled two sixes.

In my turn I lost my Infiltrators in close combat and noticed one problem: Space Marine Armor! And his Warpsmith.
He rolled pretty well on saves and so his losses were not so severe. His main goal was to take out my Katahprons and he tried hard for five melee rounds to bring down my Dragoon.
He also managed to kill my Dunecrawler in Round 2.
Okay, one tactical mistake was maybe blocking my close combat specialists. My Kataphron Destroyers were blocked behind the Kastelans and couldn't get into close combat quick enough.

Anyway it was a fun match and lasted for almost three hours.
I learned a lot again and my loosing streak is still intact.

I defintly need another bunch of Kastelans and I think I'll go with the Electro-Priests even though I think they don't look that good. But I need more diversity. And more punch. One thing to gain more punch will be another weapon for the Dunecrawler to punch holes. Big holes!

And now I prepare for Sunday when I get visited by a Kult of Speed.

One evening paint: Imperial Bunker

I had it sitting on my shelf since Armies on Parade.
The Bunker didn't fit into the scenery so it stayed unpainted until yesterday.

I'm really not big fan ob painting scenery but this one seemed makeable in not so much time. Also it was not orange which is a big plus after the last few month.
So painting the bunker from primed black to fully painted took me about three hours and included no magic.

Ryza Rising

It's done!
My Ryza War Convocation is completed.

Okay, as completed as a Warhammer 40k army can be ;)
I've still a lot of support to build and paint but this is it. I'll field them (or parts of it) twice next week and then we'll see what need some support and improvement.
Also this will probably be my entry for Armies on Parade this year. With more orange guys from Ryza.

WIP in March

Yes, I've been lazy posting pictures lately.
The main reason is having finished my War Convocation and adding some last Kastelans and then take some serious pictures.
So I haven't been lazy painting, just blogging about painting.

Basic Weathering Tutorial

When it comes to painting I hear one sentence pretty often
Just basic... No fancy stuff!
First of all: I don't have the feeling that I'm doing fancy stuff.
One of things I'm usually doing is weathering. It's grimdark. It's battling for month or years or even longer.
I can't imagine that someone in the middle of a war says:
Well, that doesn't look good! Let's paint the tank so it looks nice again.
Okay, maybe they really do this in a world where bright yellow and blood red are something like camouflage.

But that's not to point today. I like my armies 'used'. Like they've got some hits, got hit by gravel and rocks and stuff like that.

Why entering 40k as a Newbie is difficult

Compared to many others I'm pretty new to all this Warhammer40k-Gaming stuff. Two and a half years is nothing. I've no stories to tell from the ancient times and I can't say "Well, back in 2nd Edition everything was better..."
I was, so to say, raised with the 7th Edition and doesn't have much to compare.
On the other hand this gives me a nice point of view as a Newbie on starting over with Warhammer 40k. And maybe what's lacking at the moment to gain more newbies.

War Convocation Update

Yes, it's growing.

I left the Skitarii-Part behind and moved on the last one:
Cult Mechanicus.
My TechPriest is already finished and I'm currently working on a squad of Kataphron Breachers.
I feel like I'm not painting because it's fun at the moment. It's more like "getting things done". I've one more squad of Kataphron to paint to call it a Minimum War Convocation. But there are a few units I want to paint after that because I want to have a useful one. I'll keep you updated.

Battlereport: Campaign Part I

Second Battlereport this week!
It was Part I of the Campaign at the local Warhammer-Shop.
We started with 1000 Points each and tried to recover an artifact.

Factions were:

  • Iron Warriors
  • Dark Eldar
  • Skitarii (mine)
Because I only had 940 Points of AdMech-Force ready, I decided to reduce my Rangers and Vanguard (No Arquebus) and filled up with an Eversor Assassin.

Everyone started in one corner and at the begining of every turn we rolled to D6 to determine the order.
I was pretty confident with having three units with special rule "dunestrider" granting me +3" for every movment. But I rolled dice and in the end the non-Dunestriders were held up by the fast ones.
